Platinum reads as a plain white metal across the counter, so the check starts with the mark, not the shine. On a ring it sits inside the shank; on a chain, on the clasp tongue or the tag beside it; on earrings, on the post or the friction back. We read it under a loupe, since a PT950 stamp wears to a faint outline after years of daily wear.

• The mark - PT, PLAT, 950, 900 or 850, checked against how the metal behaves
• Weight - grams or pennyweights, taken on the scale and read out before any number is quoted
• Density - a platinum band sits heavier in the hand than white gold of the same width
• Bullion detail - capsule seal, assay card, mint marking and stated troy weight
• Non-platinum parts - clasps, spring bars and pins separated before the weight is agreed

Most platinum offers come in lower for reasons that have nothing to do with the metal market. The mark is the usual one: white metal carrying no PT, PLAT or numeric stamp cannot be bought as platinum however it looks, and a stamp polished flat over the years counts the same way.

• Rhodium plated silver - the same cool white surface, no platinum stamp underneath, and a common mix-up
• Opened bullion - handling marks appear fast once a coin leaves its capsule, and a cut assay card cannot be resealed
• Polished coins - cleaning strips the original mint surface and nothing puts it back
• Mixed construction - white gold clasps, steel springs and base metal pins add no platinum weight
• Loose scrap - filings, casting sprue and bench offcuts need refining first, so those we are not buying at present

Stone-set brand name pieces are the exception worth bringing in whole, since the signature and the setting are read alongside the metal.
