Flatware is bought on its metal, so condition is read differently here than on a display piece. What counts is how much silver is left and what non-silver is attached.

• Tarnish - a black or amber film sits on the surface and costs nothing; testing cuts straight through it.
• Bent tines and dented bowls - a splayed fork or crimped spoon bowl still weighs what it weighed new.
• Buffed handles - a monogram costs nothing, but one ground off leaves a thin, dished handle, and that metal is gone.
• Wear-through on plate - copper or nickel showing at the tip of a spoon bowl is the giveaway on EPNS pieces.
• Loose bolsters - a knife handle that rattles on its blade is failed filler, not a fault in the silver.

Nothing needs fixing before you come in. A bent fork and a straight one from the same pattern settle at the same number.

Two things move a flatware offer that are not on the counter yet: what stayed behind in another drawer, and what the set came with when it was bought.

• Serving pieces - ladles, cold-meat forks, pie servers and sugar tongs are the heaviest items in a service and usually live apart from the place settings.
• The chest or roll - the felt-lined case holds no silver itself, but its empty slots show at a glance which places are missing.
• Stainless replacements - later steak knives and salad sets mixed into a service are steel, and they come out before anything is weighed.
• Invoice or appraisal - a document naming the maker and pattern settles identification when the marks on the back have worn flat.
