A coin is identified before it is weighed, so the counter opens with questions rather than a scale. None of it is a quiz, the answers simply move things along faster.

• Which series - Eagle, Maple Leaf, Krugerrand, Sovereign, Philharmonic or a pre-1933 US piece. The name alone settles fineness and gold content.
• Date and mintmark - common dates sit with the bullion group, scarcer dates and mintmarks are the ones that get a second look.
• Slabbed or raw - if a coin is sealed by PCGS or NGC we read the grade off the label instead of judging the surfaces ourselves.
• How many of each - tenth, quarter and half ounce fractionals are counted apart from full ounce pieces.
• What came with it - mint box, capsule, assay card or the original purchase paperwork.

• Fine gold, not gross weight - a 22 karat Eagle or Krugerrand reads heavier than a troy ounce on the scale because of the copper alloy, yet each holds one ounce of gold.
• Totals per series - Eagles, Maples, Sovereigns and fractional pieces are added up in their own groups, not as one pile.
• The market that hour - the fine gold total is quoted against the gold market while you wait at the counter.
• Metal or premium - slabbed grades, scarce dates and pre-1933 US gold are quoted above content, while common bullion is quoted on content alone.
• Signing off - photo ID for the bill of sale, then cash, or store credit if you would rather trade.
