Let’s Make a Deal

Getting an iMac Ready for Inspection

An iMac hides very little. Everything that moves the number is either on the glass, on the back panel, or in About This Mac, and it is all visible within a minute of the machine powering on. A short round of prep at home settles most of the questions before you reach the counter.

Run through these before you bring the machine in:

  • Find the serial number first: on the 24-inch iMac it is printed on the underside of the aluminum foot, and on the 27-inch Retina 5K it sits under the stand base. Text it over and the estimate starts sooner.
  • Open About This Mac and note the chip, unified memory and storage - M1, M3 or M4 with 8GB or 16GB, and 256GB, 512GB or 1TB. Memory is soldered on Apple silicon iMacs, so the original build is what gets graded.
  • Sign out of Apple ID and iCloud, then run Erase All Content and Settings so the machine boots straight to the Hello setup screen. A Mac that stops at a login prompt cannot be tested through.
  • Bring the power cable. The 24-inch models use a magnetic connector on a color-matched woven cord, and higher-spec units carry Gigabit Ethernet inside the power brick, so a generic cord is not a substitute.
  • Include the Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse if you still have them. The color-matched set that shipped with a 24-inch iMac, Touch ID version included, is graded with the machine rather than as loose accessories.

Photos help as well: one straight-on shot of the screen while it is off, one of the ports along the back, and one of the underside of the foot showing the serial. Bring a valid photo ID, and the iMac is tested in front of you before any figure is agreed.

What Gets Checked on an iMac at the Counter

An iMac is graded from the face first, because the panel and cover glass are one bonded sheet. The screen is driven through a white field for backlight patches and dead pixels, a mid-grey field for retention, and raking light for hairline chips at the glass border.

  • Chip and memory - About This Mac confirms M1, M3 or M4, unified memory and SSD size; none of it is upgradeable, so the original build sets the range.
  • Ports and power - every Thunderbolt/USB-C port is loaded, the magnetic power connector is seated, and Gigabit Ethernet in the brick is tested on models that carry it.
  • Stand and chin - the hinge has to hold its tilt, and the aluminum foot is turned over for deep scuffs and the serial.
  • Live hardware - fans, the speaker array and the FaceTime camera run last.

You stand there for it, so you see the screens the offer is built from.

The iMac Faults That Pull an Offer Down

Deductions on an all-in-one land differently than on a laptop. Every mark sits in plain view on a 24-inch or 27-inch sheet of glass that cannot be separated from the panel behind it.

  • Coating haze - the anti-reflective layer on Retina 5K panels wears into cloudy patches that read like smudges and do not wipe off.
  • Edge chips and pressure marks - a chip at the glass border or a bright spot above the chin means replacing the whole panel.
  • Image retention - a ghosted dock or menu bar shows on a grey test field and survives a restart.
  • Base memory - 8GB of soldered unified memory sells slower than a 16GB machine of the same year and storage.
  • Substitute accessories - a generic USB keyboard instead of the color-matched Magic Keyboard leaves a gap for the next owner.

Fan roar or dust packed into the rear vent slot points to work behind the glass and is looked at separately.
