What to Check on Your Smartphone Before You Text Us

A phone estimate is mostly numbers you can read off the device in about two minutes. The more of them that arrive with your photos, the closer the text figure sits to the cash we count out after testing the handset in front of you.

Five things to pull off the handset before you send the message:

• Start with the IMEI. Settings > General > About lists it, dialing *#06# shows it, and it is printed on the original box label. That number pins down the exact model, storage tier and carrier history before we touch the phone.
• Read the Carrier Lock row on that same About screen. No SIM restrictions means factory unlocked; a carrier name, or an unfinished installment plan, changes the number and is better mentioned in your first message than found at the counter.
• Open Battery, then Battery Health and Charging, and send the maximum capacity figure. Note whether Peak Performance Capability reads normally or shows a Service message, since a tired cell moves the offer more than a scuffed aluminum frame.
• Scroll the About screen for Parts and Service History. A screen, battery or camera flagged as Unknown Part, or True Tone missing from your display settings, means the handset was opened, and saying so up front keeps the estimate honest.
• Photograph it in daylight with the screen on and a white image displayed so hairline cracks show. Capture all four corners, the back glass at an angle, and the port - Lightning on the 12 through 14, USB-C from the 15 up.

Send all five in one message and we can usually answer with a range rather than a question. What photos cannot show - Face ID, speakers, cellular signal, a swollen battery pushing on the display - comes out on the diagnostics run while you watch, and the cash figure follows that test.
