Let’s Make a Deal

What We Look At First on a Breitling

Breitling runs from a hand-wound Navitimer 806 to a modern Caliber 01 Chronomat, so the first job at the counter is pinning down exactly which watch is in front of us.

The checks that set the reference and the caliber

  • Subdial layout tells us the movement before anything is opened. Registers at 3, 6 and 9 point to the in-house Caliber 01 family, while registers at 12, 6 and 9 usually mean a Valjoux 7750 base, and the two grade differently.
  • We read the caseback engraving for the reference and serial, then match it against the dial and hands. Vintage pieces often carry that number between the lugs instead, and early Navitimer dials with the AOPA wings grade separately from the later twin-jet logo.
  • The bracelet gets its own look. Rouleaux and Pilot links are screwed rather than pinned, so we count screws, check the folding clasp for stretch and stamping, and note whether the Chronomat rider tabs are still the original ones.

Bring any links that were taken out, along with their screws. Breitling links are model-specific, and a bracelet that can be sized back up grades better than a short one.

What Usually Trims a Breitling Offer

Most deductions we write on Breitlings have nothing to do with whether the watch runs. They come from parts that were swapped, polished away or never came back from a service.

The three we see most often

  • Aftermarket stones. Chronomat and Bentley cases turn up with stone-set bezels and drilled dials that Breitling never fitted. Factory gem-set models carry their own reference numbers, so an outside setting reads as damage to the case rather than an upgrade.
  • Heavy polishing and service parts. A Navitimer with its lug chamfers rounded off, a slide rule ring whose printed scale has worn thin, or a vintage dial relumed over the original tritium each move the watch down a grade.
  • Missing originals. A Chronomat on a third-party rubber strap with the bracelet left at home, an Aerospace or Colt sitting on a leaking battery, or an Emergency without its beacon documentation all cost more than sellers expect.

None of this stops a sale. Non-running and parts-condition Breitlings are still bought - it only changes the number, and we walk you through each deduction while the watch is on the pad.

Location Advantage and Cash Offers

Both of our Dorchester stores buy the same range of items, so bring your Breitling to whichever is closer. Chronograph pushers and the bezel action are checked on the spot, and the box and papers are worth bringing along. Text or WhatsApp us photos for a free preliminary estimate before you travel.
