What Is Still Original on Your Rolex

Rolex value tracks how much of the watch left the factory that way. The dial, hands, bezel insert and crystal are the four parts most often swapped, and each swap shows.

The parts we check first

  • Dial first. Original printing reads as one job - the coronet, the depth line, the minute track. Refinished and service dials turn up constantly on 1675, 5513 and 1601 cases. Aged tritium is fine; lume that does not match the hands is not.
  • Hands have to belong to the reference - Mercedes hands on a Submariner or Explorer, the right counter hands on a Daytona. A set relumed bright white against a dial that has gone cream tells us they were fitted later.
  • Bezel and crystal date the watch. An evenly faded aluminum insert on a 16610 or 16710 is period-correct; a Cerachrom insert on a five-digit case is not. Sapphire crystals from 2002 on carry a laser-etched coronet at six o'clock.

Do not swap anything back before you come in. Aftermarket diamond bezels and dials usually pull the number down, and we would rather see the watch exactly as it has been running.

Service History That Helps, Service That Hurts

A serviced Rolex is not a problem - a service that quietly turned a vintage watch into a modern one is. What we need is the record of what was done.

Before you bring the watch in

  • Bring the service record. A Rolex Service Center invoice or the service card gives the date and the caliber - 1570, 3135, 3235, 4130 - so nobody has to guess when the movement was last opened. Independent watchmaker receipts count as well.
  • Look for the service pouch. Rolex fits new parts and hands the originals back only when the owner asks for them. An original dial, insert or hand set sitting in that bag can matter more than the part now on the watch.
  • Skip the pre-sale cleanup. Ultrasonic tanks lift lume off older dials, generic mainsprings and aftermarket crystals show under a loupe, and a stretched bracelet tightened by welding at a local shop is easy to spot at the links.

A Rolex that stopped years ago is still worth bringing in. Do not force the crown or over-wind it - screw the Twinlock or Triplock crown back down and leave the rest to us.

Location Advantage and Cash Offers

Both of our Dorchester stores buy the same range of items, so bring your Rolex to whichever is closer. Box, papers and a full-length bracelet are what move the number most, and an unpolished case is worth more than a freshly buffed one. For a higher-value piece an appointment means a specialist is on hand when you arrive.
