Let’s Make a Deal

Case, Bracelet and What Polishing Does to a TAG Heuer

Steel TAG Heuer cases pick up wear fast, and how that wear was handled matters more than the wear itself. Finishing, edges and bracelet wear get looked at first.

Check these on your watch before you come in

  • Turn a Carrera or Aquaracer case in raking light. Factory finishing is brushed on the top surfaces with a narrow polished chamfer running along the lug edge; if that line has gone soft and rounded, the case has been buffed at some point.
  • Hold the bracelet horizontally by one end. Older Link and S/el bracelets built from folded links sag and rattle once the pins wear, while solid-link Aquaracer and Carrera bracelets should stay stiff. Stretch is normal age, not damage, but it is graded.
  • Aquaracer and Formula 1 bezels should turn one direction only and hold each click without slipping back. A faded aluminum insert, a chipped ceramic one, or a scratched anti-reflective coating on the sapphire all read as condition rather than as faults.

Do not have it polished before you come in. A scratched original case grades better than a buffed one, and the removed links in their bag are worth more than a shortened bracelet.

How the In-Store Inspection Runs, Step by Step

The whole check takes a few minutes at the counter and you watch it happen. This is the order the work follows, so nothing behind the number comes as a surprise.

The order the counter check follows

  • The caseback comes first. On most modern pieces the reference and serial are engraved there, and that code names the exact model and the movement inside - a Calibre 16 Carrera and a quartz Formula 1 sit on different scales.
  • Then the movement. An automatic gets wound and left running, the date is pushed through midnight, and the crown is tried in every position for a clean pull and a tight screw-down. A dead battery in a quartz model is not a problem.
  • Then papers and extras. The warranty card with its stamped dealer and date, the outer box, the spare links and the hangtag are all noted, and the card counts for most when the serial printed on it matches the one on the case.

After that you hear the number and what drove it. Bring a valid ID for the paperwork, and if the offer works for you, the cash is paid on the same visit.

Location Advantage and Cash Offers

Our two stores sit about a 7-minute drive apart in Dorchester, and either one can look at your TAG Heuer. Chronograph function and the state of the bracelet or strap are checked on the spot, and older Heuer-signed pieces are looked at separately.
