Boston Gold Buyers FAQ: What Local Sellers Ask Most Often

People walk up to our counter with the same handful of questions, whether it’s their first time selling gold or their fifth. So we pulled them together. Here’s a plain Boston gold buyers FAQ covering what local sellers ask most often, from how quotes work to what we actually buy. If your question isn’t here, just ask.

Getting started

Do I need an appointment to sell gold?

No. You can walk into either of our Dorchester stores during business hours. If you’d like a number first, send a photo for a quote before you come by.

Can I get a quote before I come in?

Yes. Text or WhatsApp a clear photo of your gold and any stamps to (857) 385-6535, and we’ll give you a ballpark. A firm offer comes once we can weigh and test the piece in person.

How long does an evaluation take?

For a few pieces, usually just a few minutes. A large mixed lot, like a box of tangled jewelry, takes a little longer because we sort and weigh it by karat. You’re welcome to watch the whole thing.

What we buy

What kinds of gold do you buy?

Gold jewelry, broken and scrap gold, dental gold, and gold coins, in any condition. You don’t need to clean or sort anything first. Our Cash for Gold page has the full picture.

Do you buy broken or scrap gold?

Yes. Broken chains, single earrings, and worn pieces are valued by weight and purity, the same as anything intact. Our post on scrap gold vs gold jewelry explains why condition rarely changes the number.

Do you buy gold coins?

We do, both bullion and collectible coins. Coins are verified and can be worth more than their metal, so they’re looked at differently than scrap. See our Gold Coin Buyers page and our guide on where to sell gold coins in Boston.

Do you buy silver, platinum, and diamonds too?

Yes. Alongside gold we buy silver, platinum, and diamonds. For a gold ring with stones, we price the metal and the stones separately, as our post on diamonds and gemstones explains.

Offers and payment

How do you decide the offer?

Gold is valued by weight times purity against the current market, which sets the melt value. Buyers pay a share of that, since refining and reselling cost money. We do the weighing and testing in front of you and explain the number. Our guide on what gold buyers look for breaks it down.

Gold purity by karat

Stamp Karat Gold content
10K / 417 10K 41.7%
14K / 585 14K 58.5%
18K / 750 18K 75%
22K / 916 22K 91.7%
24K / 999 24K 99.9%

Do you pay right away?

Yes. If you accept the offer, you’re paid on the spot. If you don’t, you keep your gold and walk out. The evaluation is free and there’s no obligation to sell.

What percentage does cash for gold pay?

Buyers pay a share of melt value rather than full spot, and the exact share varies by buyer and overhead. That’s why we suggest watching the test and getting a second quote when the amount matters.

How much is an ounce or gram of gold worth today?

Gold trades on a spot price that moves every day, quoted per troy ounce, and one troy ounce is about 31.1 grams. To estimate a per-gram figure, divide the day’s spot price by 31.1, then multiply by the item’s purity, so a gram of 14K counts as 58.5% of that number. Prices shift daily, so the fastest way to get a real figure is a same-day quote: text or WhatsApp a photo to (857) 385-6535.

How is a gold buyer different from a pawn shop?

A gold buyer purchases your gold outright at a share of its melt value, so there is no loan, no interest, and no pawn ticket to redeem later. A pawn shop usually lends money against your item and holds it until you repay, which is a different arrangement entirely. When you sell to us, you are paid on the spot, the piece is ours, and you leave with cash rather than a debt to settle.

Before you visit

What do I need to bring?

Your gold and a valid photo ID, which is commonly required for precious metal sales. Certificates and coin paperwork help but aren’t required. Our checklist on what to bring when selling gold covers it.

Where are you located?

We have two stores in Dorchester, Boston: Fields Corner and Uphams Corner, about a 7-minute drive apart. Both buy the same items, so pick whichever is closer. Check hours and directions for each.

How do I choose the best gold buyer in Boston?

Compare a few things before you sell: whether the buyer tests and weighs your gold right in front of you, how openly they explain the share of melt value they pay, and whether they welcome a second quote. Transparent testing you can watch is a good sign, since the weight and the karat drive the number. Getting a second quote elsewhere costs nothing and helps you feel confident when the amount matters.

Ready when you are

That covers the questions we hear most. Whenever you’re ready, bring your gold to either Dorchester store or send a photo for a quote first, and start on our Cash for Gold page. No appointment, no pressure, and no fee to find out what your gold is worth.
